Letter From the Chair

Welcome to Norwescon 43. My name is Tonya Clark, the chair of Norwescon, and on behalf of the staff, volunteers, panelists, and your fellow members, we are glad you are here!

You may have noticed some changes from previous years. For example, parking is easier, and there is never a wait for the elevator. While we all look forward to living in a post-apocalyptic world, or at least a post-pandemic world, this year we are making virtue of virtuality, and have decided to hold the con at your place. Thanks for inviting us!

Actually, we are holding the con in Airmeet, which I think you will find intuitive and easy to use. Be sure to check out the features beyond just the panels. Most virtual cons have one main stage. We have 10! Take a moment to look through the Guidebook and see all we have to offer.

We are excited to offer over well over 200 hours of panels, workshops, and special events. We have 110 panelists, and that’s not counting game hosts and performers. There are 20 hours of author readings. We have improv comedy, concerts, contests, and dances. Club tables, games, watch parties, and venues where people can get together and schmooze. It will be much easier to get a good seat at the masquerade. this year there is even a Drag Academy with a Saturday showcase!

Be sure to check out the art show and the dealers’ room. This year we are not limited by space. Artists and vendors are not limited by how much they can haul to the con, and there is never a crowd blocking you from that thing you didn’t even know you wanted.

Our guests of honor from 2020 have traveled through time to be with us for this event. Jacqueline Carey is our writer guest of honor, author of the award-winning Kushiel’s Legacy historical fantasy series, and the inspiration for the Longest Night theme of the convention and the Longest Night Concert Dance Party, featuring five musical acts. Our science guest of honor, Dr. Susan Langley, helped create the field of underwater archeology and knows more than a little about pirates. Claire Eddy, representing our spotlight publisher, Tor Books, is an executive editor who has been working with fantasy, science fiction, and horror authors for 30 years. Finally, Sana Takeda, our artist guest of honor in absentia, has loaned us her wonderful artwork and graphics from Japan, where she is a Hugo-winning illustrator of comics.

So welcome to Norwescon 43! We are glad you are with us!

Artist Guest of Honor Sana Takeda

Sana Takeda’s path to award-winning illustration began in Niigata Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan, where she grew up. As a child, she taught herself to draw by mimicking what she found in graphic novels and Manga. This laid the foundation for her career as an artist.

At 20, Sana went to work for SEGA, using 3D Computer Generated Imagery systems to create images of NBA players and other athletes. She left SEGA to go out on her own as an illustrator, and started working with Marvel Comics. Over the years, she worked on several Marvel publications, including X-Men, Venom, Civil War II, Ms. Marvel, and X-23. In 2006, she started working with C. B. Cebulski on Drain, a series about an immortal Japanese vampire.

While working on X-23, Sana collaborated with Marjorie Liu, and in 2013, the two teamed up to create the Monstress series.

Monstress is an epic fantasy about war, race, and slavery, with underlying themes of inner strength and the power of friendship between women. It has been described as being “paced like a novel but drawn like a comic.” Monstress has been critically acclaimed, winning Sana two British Fantasy Awards for Best Comic/Graphic Novel, five Eisner Awards, a Harvey Book of the year Award, and four Hugo Awards for her work on it.

Spotlight Publisher & Representative Claire Eddy of Tor Books

Claire Eddy is an executive editor at Tor/Forge Books and has been with the company for over 30 years. Asked for a bio, she provides this statement:

They say that those who can’t do, teach. In college, I envisioned becoming a professor in Medieval studies, teaching generations of students and toiling away as a nameless handmaiden of history. But the editing life called its siren song and for more than 30 years I’ve worked at Tor, indulging in my many passions in genre fiction—fantasy, science fiction, horror, and mysteries. I’ve had the honor of working with such wonderful authors as Jacqueline Carey, Juliet Marillier, Ramsey Campbell, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Gene Wolfe... and many others, too many to count.

I’ve spent the better part of my adult life working with authors to (hopefully) make their stories and dreams the best that they can be, becoming that “third eye,” general nudge, and all around pain in the butt to accomplish this feat. I give encouragement when I can, instruct when possible, and, again, hopefully contribute in some small way to sharing in the dream, giving readers new worlds and delightful puzzles.

And the best part? I still get to do this and every day feels as fresh as my very first day at Tor did. There is no other feeling like that in the world...

Betty Ballantine

Betty Ballantine was the guest of honor at Norwescon 16.

She and her husband, Ian Ballantine, were the groundbreaking publishing team that helped invent the modern paperback and vastly expand the market for science fiction and other generes. Paperbacks in the 1930s were limited mostly to poorly made "pulp" novels. The Ballantines took advantage of new technology in production and distribution, and of a clause in copyright law, discovered by Ian, that waived fees on books from Britain.

They helped establish the paperback market for science fiction, Westerns, and other genres, releasing original works and reprints of works by authors including J.R.R. Tolkien, Arthur C. Clarke, and H.P. Lovecraft. They made their books available in nontraditional outlets like drugstores, railroad stations, etc.

In the 1950s and 60s science fiction and fantasy were looked down upon. Betty cultivated and encouraged writers and artists of cover art, thus doing the entire field a double service moving science fiction and fantasy out of the pulp category.

Ian and Betty Ballantine were voted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2008.

If you get a chance, read her bio by Anne McCaffrey in the Norwescon 16 program book, which is on our website, in the History section.

Bob Newman was best known for playing Gertrude, sidekick/girlfriend/City Dump telephone operator to J.P. Patches on the long-running television program on KIRo TV, Seattle, Washington. Other characters he portrayed on the show included Ketchikan the Animal Man, one-eyed gentle yet odd creature Ggoorrrsstt the Friendly Frpl, clumsy handyman Leroy Frump, the mysterious Zenobia, the Swami of Pastrami, Sturdley the Bookworm, and, each December, a somewhat bumbling Santa Claus.

Bob joined the program in 1960 and created a role for himself when, working in a technical job off camera, he called out to J.P. in a falsetto voice while J.P. was pretending to speak with an unseen and unheard telephone operator named Gertrude. Soon, Newman was dressing up like a life-sized Raggedy Anne – complete with house dresses borrowed from his mother, a mop wig and heavy make-up – to appear on-camera as Gertrude. In 2008, a life-sized bronze statue of Gertrude and J.P. was dedicated in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood.

Robert Peter Suryan

August 4, 1950 – January 16, 2021

Who’s Robert Peter? Everyone knew him as Bob. Or Uncle Bob, Unka Bob, Night Bob but mostly just good old Bob. I think only his mother ever called him Robert Peter and that is strictly a guess. If I had to bet on it, I’d wager that even she called him Bob. That’s just who he was... Bob. Even when he chaired Norwescon, he was quite unassuming and approachable. He left his ego for more important things, like his wife, Judy. Bob and Judy met at Vikingcon on the campus of Western Washington University, and two hearts became one. Marriage followed and they began their adventure together in earnest.

Angela came first, then Peter, and Alex. The most important thing in Bob’s life was his family. Everything else amounted to extra-curricular activities. Employment was just a means to meet the needs of the household. Cars were selected for their ability to transport the kids, their dog Heathcliff, and Judy to whatever family outing was next. To say that Bob involved himself in his children’s interests and activities would be an understatement. When Alex became interested in Astronomy, the pride and delight Bob took in nurturing that pursuit was immense.

A proud graduate of West Seattle High School and the University of Washington, Bob had a mind that was sharper than a d’k tahg. Bob owned a nearly complete library of Greek and Roman literary classics in addition to all his astronomy works. If you asked him what he likes to read, he would reply “Really long and boring books.”

Bob’s involvement in fandom came from loving science (especially astronomy) and loving Judy. From chairing Norwescon to schlepping things around, Bob could always be counted on as Judy’s number one supporter and fan. He was awarded a Lifetime Membership to Norwescon.

For many years, Puget Sound fandom swirled in and around the Suryan household. ConCom meetings, book reviews/ critiques, Westwind production, and there were socials. Judy excelled as the hostess. Bob let his spouse bask in the limelight while he enjoyed playing the bon vivant and engaging in good conversation. No one could out pun Bob. Bob would retire while the party still hadn’t reached its zenith. When Bob felt things had gone on long enough, he would venture forth from the bedroom wearing socks, t-shirt, and his tighty-whities, extolling the troops to “Get out of my House.” Thus would end another fun-filled NWSFS social.

Let us raise a dram of Bushmills and give a final toast to our friend Bob Suryan. A gentleman, a scholar, and a truly wonderful human being.

Of all the money that e'er I spent
I've spent it in good company
And all the harm that e’er I did
Alas it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit
To memory now I can't recall
So lift to me a parting glass
Good-bye and joy be with you all

May 1, 1939 – November 24, 2020

It has been many years since Sue has been an active member of Norwescon but her impact on our convention is still with us. Sue became a member of Norwescon around Norwescon 8, bringing her two sons, who were already science fiction fans at a young age. As a mom she noticed that there was a need for a more organized way to watch over the youngest members, and saw they needed something more to do.

Sue was someone who didn’t just talk about doing something but believed in stepping up. Next year she joined the ConCom and laid out a plan that was the start of KidCon. Though Norwescon had to discontinue KidCon many years later, the parents and kids who took part have become lifetime participants of the convention and ConCom, who now bring their own children to the convention, our “Next Generation.”

Sue trained a wonderful staff who took over the reins of the department, allowing her to help in other ways. Sue served as program director, bringing more family-centered programming, and business manager, bringing more professional standards to the team. During the week, Sue was a fiscal specialist at the UW Department of Zoology and she was our favorite lay nun. Sue was deeply devoted to her faith and kindly and patiently suffered every nun pun that we could come up with, including my personal favorite “Nun on the Run.” For her work with Norwescon, she was awarded a lifetime membership. After college, Lister competed for the Converse Track Club, raising his shot-put mark to 64 ft 3 in. After trying out for the United States Football League, he opted to pursue acting.

Lister had numerous guest appearances on TV series, including playing Klaang, the first Klingon ever to contact humans, in the pilot episode of Star Trek: Enterprise. Lister's film roles included parts in The Dark Knight, Austin Powers in Goldmember, The Fifth Element, Zootopia, Rondo, and a lot of B-movies.

Vonda N. Mcintyre

August 28, 1948 - April 1, 2019

Vonda McIntyre was an American science fiction author who lived in the Seattle area. Her tales often featured female protagonists—among them a healer in a post-apocalyptic Earth who cures the ill with snake venom.

She wrote several Star Trek and Star Wars novels, including Enterprise: The First Adventure and The Entropy Effect. She wrote the novelizations for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. In her novel, The Entropy Effect, she gave the Star Trek character Mr. Sulu the first name Hikaru, which later became canon within the Star Trek universe.

McIntyre won her first Nebula Award in 1973 for the novelette “Of Mist, and Grass, and Sand.” That story was incorporated into her 1978 novel Dreamsnake, which won a Hugo Award, as well as another Nebula. The Moon and the Sun earned McIntyre her third Nebula in 1998. An adaptation of The Moon and the Sun has been filmed and is pending release.

While taking part in a science fiction convention panel, McIntyre became exasperated at a fellow panelist's extreme negativity toward existing science fiction TV shows. She asked the panel and audience if they had managed to see Starfarers, which she claimed was an amazing SF miniseries that had almost no viewers due to bad scheduling on the part of the network. No such show existed, but after reflecting on the plot she described, McIntyre felt it would make a good novel, and went on to write Starfarers.

She founded the Clarion West Writers Workshop in Seattle, Washington, with the support of Clarion founder Robin Scott Wilson.

Norwescon's New Antiracisim Statement, Code of Conduct, and Harassment Policy

We announced this in our last newsletter, but think it bears repeating:

At Norwescon we believe in periodically reexamining policies which are important to the convention. This year's executive team appointed a committee to review Norwescon's harassment policy, adopted in 2013. After several months engaged in meetings and sensitivity review, we are pleased to announce the new policy in advance of our virtual convention.

The policy has expanded to include an antiracism statement, code of conduct, and harassment policy. The committee's work also included amending the convention's mission statement to be congruent with the new policies. Norwescon is excited to more explicitly recognize the role it plays in uplifting marginalized voices in our community and to declare that we are an antiracist organization.

You may view the new policy here.

If you have questions or feedback for us, please write to the revision committee at safe@norewscon.org.

"The Longest Night"

Announcing Norwescon's New Antiracisim Statement, Code of Conduct, and Harassment Policy

Burlesque - Ripped From the Pages

Despite the virtual format, we will still have an amazing burlesque show this year. See returning favorites, including Bella La Blanc and Miss Violet DeVille, along with some new faces and special guests.

Keep an eye on the website for more: https://www.norwescon.org/con/special-events/burlesque/

Masquerade Submissions Open Now!

Get ready for the Masquerade! Have you been spending your stay- home-stay-safe time creating a costume? It's time to show it off! Send us a short video of your costume (rules and guidelines here) to be presented at our Masquerade on Saturday evening of the convention. All skill levels are welcome. We can't wait to see what you come up with!

Support our friends at OffWorld as they empty out their warehouse!

Our friends at OffWorld Designs - whom you've likely seen in the hotel lobby at Norwescon - have announced that they are retiring!

While we're sad to see them go, we're happy to have worked with them for many years now. They're holding a 50% off sale to clear out their warehouse, and we encourage everyone to go see what kind of good geeky t-shirts you can find!

Norwescon merchandise is here - or have fun exploring the rest of the site!

Our heartfelt best wishes to Barb, Ray, and everyone else at OffWorld!

Experience Virtual Norwescon on Airmeet

Norwescon 43 will be accessed via Airmeet, an online conference platform. We're still working out all the details, but Airmeet will give us some great features to make it easy for our members to go to panels, attend special events, and socialize with eachother, all in one platform. Stay tuned for more details.

Virtual Movie Watch Parties at Norwescon

As part of virtual Norwescon, we will be hosting virtual watch parties on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night of the convention. What is a virtual watch party? It is a way to watch the same movies with other Norwescon members, and have a group text chat with them at the same time. We will be using a Chrome plugin called "Scener" which will sync all the video streaming and provide the group chat functionality.

Due to licensing issues, you will need to have an account on a major video streaming service to join the watch party. We will use a different streaming service each night. The current plan is to use Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HBO Max.

As we get closer to the convention, we will announce the movies and post a list on the website.

Spotlight Publisher: TOR Books

Claire Eddy is an executive editor at Tor/Forge Books and has been with the company for over 30 years. Her many passions in genre fiction, including fantasy, science fiction, horror, and mysteries, have led her to work with many wonderful authors through the years. Her goal is to help authors make their stories and dreams the best they can be, whether through experience, support, or a kick in the butt as needed. After three decades, Claire is still excited to be working with authors to give readers new worlds to explore and puzzles to solve.

Reminder: GOH Tea

Don't miss the opportunity to get a ticket to the Guest of Honor Tea Party. The GoH Tea Party will provide a great way to spend time with our honored guests in an intimate setting. In addition to the opportunity to hang out with our GoHs, each attendee will have a special package shipped to them containing hand-selected teas, a commemorative Norwescon mug, and a delicious baked good from a local pastry chef.

Enter the Single Pattern Contest!

A cloak can protect your fantastic garb on the way to a celebration, or to protect you on an arduous trek across strange and dangerous lands. This year's pattern is Simplicity Pattern 8770 Unisex Costume Capes. Here's a link to the pattern. Functional or fashionable or both- it's up to you! For more details on how to enter the Single Pattern Contest, click here.

Prop Contest - a Mask or a Spear

In Celebration of The Longest Night, the major holiday in Jacqueline Carey's novels of Terre d'Ange, we invite you to create one of two items for the celebration to honor the Winter Queen, the Sun Prince, and the members of their court: a mask, as the Longest Night is celebrated by the Midwinter Masque; or a spear, by which the Sun Prince transforms the Winter Queen at the hour of the sun's return at the Masque. For details about how to enter the Prop Contest, click here.

The Longest Night is a Time for Masquerade...

Our beloved tradition of the Masquerade continues for Norwescon 43. The venue for this year's Masquerade is in cyberspace, and the imagination. This requires some changes in the format from previous years:

All presentations must be submitted in video format, and any music used must be royalty free.

All submissions received will be presented during the Masquerade on Saturday of the convention.

Registration for the Masquerade will open in early January, and close on March 14th, 2021, at midnight.

For those not wishing to be judged on presentation, costumes may be submitted for workmanship judging alone.

Children under the age of 13 must have an adult giving verbal approval at the beginning or at the end of their video submission. We will edit the approvals out for the actual event.

Group entries are welcome, if the filming is accomplished safely in accordance with safety guidelines for COVID-19.

Judging will occur prior to the Masquerade broadcast, and the results will be revealed at the end of the event.

Further information, including a new Masquerade category, will be announced in early January. Please watch our social media and https://www.norwescon.org/con/special-events/masquerade/ for updates as they become available.

Guest of Honor Selection for Norwescon 44

Each year, our Guests of Honor bring their special talents to Norwescon, and make that year unique and memorable. You can help our Guest of Honor selection committee decide who to invite for next year - send your suggestions to: gohcommittee@norwescon.org.

The Art Show is Accepting Applications!

The Norwescon 43 Virtual Art Show is now accepting applications. We'd love to hear from you! Headlined by our artist guest of honor, Sana Takeda, the Virtual Art Show is an online platform allowing you to exhibit your work and provide links to Norwescon members and the viewing public connecting to your own website, sales sites, and social media. There is no fee for entering; submissions are juried. We are working hard to develop a fun and informative platform that will be rewarding for both our artists and members. Help us feature your work!

If you'd like to apply, or have any questions, please visit us at https://www.norwescon.org/con/exhibitors/art-show/ or e-mail artshow@norwescon.org.

Refunds

Refunds Available to Reflect the Lower Cost of the Virtual Con Emails have gone out to Norwescon 43 members who registered before April 2020 describing the refund you will receive based on the lower cost of Norwescon 43 as a virtual convention. These memberships have rolled over to apply to the online convention Norwescon 43: The Longest Night, which will take place from April 1- 4, 2021.

The refunds are based on the difference between the $35 virtual adult membership price ($20 for youth) and what you paid for your 2020 membership. For example, if you paid $75 for an adult membership, you will receive a $40 refund by the end of 2020. If you have not received this email, check your inbox and spam folder and if you can't find it email us at the email below.

You can also donate this refund to Norwescon! Norwescon is a 501(c) (3) organization and every dollar we retain will be put to use to provide the best virtual Norwescon experience for everyone and assure our financial future. While we are trying to keep costs low, we incurred costs from our cancelled 2020 event and will be expending more funds for the 2021 virtual event. To donate the difference between the price of your regular membership and the virtual membership, or to ask questions, email business@norwescon.org with your name and the email address associated with your membership by November 10, 2020. You may also use this address to request a full refund if you are unable to attend the convention in 2021.

Having A Virtual Convention

Norwescon goes virtual! But... what does that even mean?

We have to level with you. While we all really want to come together in person, we also want flying cars. Our crystal balls, psychics, and tea leaves are unable to guarantee that stuffing thousands of people into a hotel will be a good idea by next April. Instead, we will make a virtue of virtuality, and gather online, rather than stand in line.

Norwescon 43 will be held at its accustomed time. We will have much of what you love about our in-person con, and other things that can best, or only, be done in cyberspace. We are at least as excited by the possibilities as we are bummed by the limitations.

We expect this to be a limited time offer, because as soon as it's safe to do so, we will plan once again to brush elbows with all of you fine fans in person.

Norwescon 43 is, even more so than usual, a Work in Progress, and we would love to have you involved. If you would like to volunteer, please leave us a note at volunteers@norwescon.org, or check out the open positions listed here. If you have an idea for programming tell us about it at programming@norwescon.org. You can join us on Facebook here.

Norwescon Writers Workshop -

Submission Deadline December 1

It's time to polish up your short story or novel, because the Norwescon Writers Workshop (NWW) deadline approaches! Now in its third year, NWW is a Milford-style workshop: a peer-to-peer critique facilitated by professional writers, editors, and agents. Past participants have had their work critiqued by Claire Eddy (Tor), Neil Clarke (Clarkesworld), Carol Berg, Curtis C. Chen, Craig Gidney, Nancy Kress, Cat Rambo, and Nisi Shawl. The moderators for Norwescon 43 will be announced soon!

Visit the workshop page on the website for guidelines. Questions? Email nww@norwescon.org.

Help us With Accessibility!

The Norwescon 43 Accessibility Team is seeking suggestions for strategies to make our online convention more accessible for our members with disabilities. If you are interested in joining the team, or have suggestions for technology solutions that have either worked well or were an absolute disaster, please let us know by contacting us here.

Norwescon Goes Virtual

We're Moving Norwescon 43 Online!

Just like you, we miss our Norwescon family. Unfortunately, we don’t expect it will be wise (or legal) for us to gather together in a hotel by early 2021. Rather than risk missing out, we’re taking the convention to a new frontier—online!

Join us on April 1–4, 2021, for Norwescon 43: The Longest Night, from the comfort and safety of your home. We will bring you the things you love about Norwescon—interactive panel discussions, hands- on workshops, scheduled games, meetups, a curated art show, dealers with the latest and greatest in fandom wares, the Norwescon Writers Workshop, Philip K. Dick Awards, and more. We’re planning virtual events to gather, hang out, meet up with old friends, and make new ones while celebrating science fiction and fantasy together. Which is what it's all about!

If you haven’t heard, our guests of honor scheduled for 2020 are all returning. We will be excited to welcome Jacqueline Carey (writer), Sana Takeda (artist), Susan Langley (science), and Tor Books (spotlight publisher). We may even add some special guests to the list, so continue to watch this space!

Moving online allows us to reduce our budget, and we are happy to pass those savings along to our members. Norwescon 43 membership fees will be $35 for adults and $20 for youth ages 13-17. If you already have a membership, we will contact you about your refund options.

Interested in helping us turn virtuality into virtue? There are many new positions that need to be filled this year. Please check out the “Get Involved” tab on our website for open positions and other ways to volunteer.

Norwescon Cancellation FAQ

To all of our fans, friends, and family,

The following is an FAQ for issues related to the cancellation of our April 2020 convention. This information has also been posted to our website, and we will update the website post as necessary when new or updated information is settled.

Norwescon was canceled?!?

Unfortunately, yes. For the safety of our guests, pros, staff, members, and everyone involved, we announced on March 13, 2020 that our planned April convention would not be held this year.

Will Norwescon be back next year?

Yes! We have every expectation of running our convention as normal next year. As Norwescon is always held over Easter weekend, next year's convention will be held from April 1–4, 2021.

Will next year be NWC43? NWC44? Something else? What's the theme? Who are the Guests of Honor?

All excellent questions! As can be expected, we don't have answers to announce just yet, but we will as soon as possible. Since it's only been a few days since we confirmed that this year wasn't happening, we have a lot of work to do wrapping things up with this year's plans, and announcements for next year will come along when we have them ready. Thanks for understanding!

Will there be any sort of summer mini-con, relaxacon, or other such event?

Obviously, this is difficult to plan right now, and we won't really be able to pursue plans until social distancing and isolation restrictions are lifted. We will be reviewing various options as the situation progresses, and will make announcements as and if we can.

What happens to our memberships?

All existing memberships for this year's convention are being automatically rolled over to next year's convention. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact our registration department at registration@norwescon.org.

Can I donate my membership instead of rolling it over?

Absolutely! Please contact our Charities department at charities@norwescon.org to make arrangements.

Are there other ways to donate to and support Norwescon?

There are! The easiest way is to donate to us directly through PayPal by using the link at the bottom of every page on this site.

You can also use Amazon Smile for your online shopping and designate Norwescon as your charitable organization of choice. From then on, every purchase you make through Amazon Smile will make a small contribution to us!

For other donation options, please contact our Charities department at charities@norwescon.org.

What happens to our hotel reservations?

If you reserved a room at our host hotel, the DoubleTree by Hilton Seattle Airport, through the links on our website, then the hotel is automatically canceling all reservations and refunding the one-night deposit. You should receive your cancellation receipt soon, if it hasn't arrived already.

If you reserved a room at our host hotel through any other service, your reservation may not be flagged as part of our negotiated room block and you will need to contact your booking agent or the hotel directly to cancel the reservation.

If you need or want to contact the hotel regarding your reservation, we recommend calling the hotel directly at 206-246-8600 to ensure you speak with someone familiar with the situation. Calling one of the national numbers may be less effective.

If you reserved a room at any other location, you will need to cancel your reservation yourself.

I'm an artist/author/dealer. What happens to my table fees?

Art Show fees are being refunded. Dealers' Room fees are either being refunded or rolled over to next year.

You will be contacted by our Dealers' Room and/or Art Show heads soon to confirm the details of how we are handling these situations. Please be patient if you haven't heard from us yet, as there are a number of moving pieces involved in these processes. We are doing our best to ensure all concerns are satisfactorily resolved.

We are also in the process of discussing ways we can help promote the many artists, authors, and dealers who were counting on the income from vending at Norwescon this year. We will announce more about this as we can; in the meantime, we encourage all of our members to visit our Art Show and Dealers' Room pages, click through the links, and support the people listed there!

What happens to the P.K. Dick Awards?

We are currently planning on hosting the Philip K. Dick Award ceremony as scheduled on April 10, 2020, through virtual means. We are in the midst of planning the details, and will make more announcements as soon as we can.

What happens to the Norwescon Writers Workshop?

The Norwescon Writers Workshop is proceeding. Feedback sessions will be conducted through virtual means. Participants will receive details on this process as soon as we have them confirmed.

We miss you!

And we miss you too! We're all very disappointed to miss out on our annual gathering. However, if you'd like to keep in touch with all your Norwescon friends and family, we have opened a Norwescon community Discord server! We invite you to stop in and start chatting -- think of it as the con that doesn't end! Norwesconline, if you will.

However, please be aware that our Discord is a community gathering and conversation space only, and we will not be using it for convention planning or formal, official communication purposes. No Exec Team or ConCom members are required to participate, and many may not. For formal announcements, please continue to watch our website and social media channels; to get questions answered, please use our Contact Info page. Thank you!

Anything else?

Finally, we at Norwescon would like to pass on our most sincere and heartfelt thanks to all of the people and parties involved in this process for their understanding of and assistance with the situation. This includes (but is by no means limited to) the staff and management of the DoubleTree by Hilton Seattle Airport, Civet Solutions, all of our pros, panelists, performers, artists, authors, dealers, and lobby table groups, our other community partners, all our volunteers, with particular thanks to our editors, social media, and website staff, and last but by no means least, our membership. The support we have received from everyone over the past days has been immeasurably helpful, and has gone a long way to make a difficult and unfortunate situation easier to deal with.

Our thanks to you all, and we'll see you in 2021!

Norwescon 43 is Canceled

To all of our fans, friends, and family,

For the health and safety of our community, due to the ongoing concerns about the coronavirus situation, and in accordance with the recent proclamations by Washington State Governor Jay Inslee and the King County Public Health Department, we have decided to cancel this year’s convention. We appreciate your patience as this has not been an easy decision to make.

We have spent much of the past two weeks monitoring the news, tracking announcements, keeping up with recommendations from local and governmental health organizations, and monitoring your questions, comments, and concerns on social media and those sent by email. While we had hoped to continue as planned, it has become clear that this would not be best for our community.

We know that you were all looking forward to this year’s convention just as much as we were, and we hope you all will be able to join us again next year. We also hope that you will continue to keep an eye on our website and social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest), as we will be working on highlighting the many professionals, authors, artists, and vendors who were looking forward to introducing you to their projects, books, creations, and wares.

Memberships for this year’s convention will be automatically rolled over to next year’s convention. If you have concerns or questions regarding this, please contact us at registration@norwescon.org.

At this time if you had a reservation in the Norwescon room block your room has been canceled and your deposit will be returned by the hotel.

We deeply and sincerely thank you all for the enthusiasm and support you have for Norwescon and look forward to your rejoining us in 2021. In the meantime, we hope you all stay safe, healthy, and keep washing those hands.

Yours,
The Norwescon 43 Executive Team

New LAN Games!

The holiday sales are over and we're here to tell you about the new games we have added to the LAN this year.

Half-Life Co-op: Get your crowbars ready and step back into the HEV suit of Gordon Freeman in the 1998 classic sci-fi shooter that revolutionized the genre. An accident at a secret government facility causes a tear between dimensions and brings us into contact with a hostile alien race. Team up with a group of friends and experience this landmark game in full co-operative mode!

Half-Life 2 Co-op: Set years after the first game, Gordon Freeman emerges from stasis into a dystopian nightmare where an alien civilization has taken over the planet. Fight your way through City 17 with your friends!

Borderlands 2: Legends of a mystical Vault has summoned hunters to the planet of Pandora, but a betrayal by their tyrannical leader leaves them half dead in a frozen wasteland. Step into the boots of one of four heroes as you explore a hostile, alien planet and blast your way through gunfights with a bazillion different guns!

Diablo: The original isometric dungeon crawl game is back and ready for LAN play. The city of Tristram was built on top of a large 16-level dungeon. In you must go, battling hideous monsters and finding lost treasure on your quest to enter hell itself!

Warcraft 2: Another classic real time strategy game set in the fantasy world of Azeroth. Build up an army and go to war with up to seven other players!

We look forward to seeing you all at Norwescon 43!
