Special events are convention activities besides panel programming. Here are some things related to special events to bring with you to con:
Props, costumes, and t-shirts proclaiming your fan loves for the Thursday Night Dance: Fandom Mash with DJ Wüdi! If you have items you don't mind lending for a photo shoot, please bring them to the info table Thursday before 7 p.m., or bring them with you to the dance. This could be phasers, a Crow T. Robot puppet, Funko Pops, a lightsaber, anime eyeglasses, a Green Lantern ring, etc.
Your own Nerf blaster and eye protection for the Sunday Nerf BYOB (Bring Your Own Blaster) game!
Your finest Fae wear for the Saturday Night Dance: The Fae Ball! Also bring any props you wouldn't mind sharing for photos.
Everyday things someone in a B-movie might have, for the It Came From the Late, Late, Late Show LARP sessions on Friday (movie monsters) and Sunday (alien invaders).
Dress-up items for the midnight Rocky Horror Picture Show after the Friday Night Dance. No toast, rice, or squirt guns, please (we want the hotel to welcome us back next year).
Dice for gaming! Check out scheduled gaming options on Guidebook and the website!
Personal information cards for the Speed Friending sessions on Thursday and Friday. We'll have slips of paper available for sharing contact information as well.
And as always: comfy shoes, a reusable water container, snacks, and whatever makes you happy!
In a previous newsletter we highlighted Thursday's happenings, with programming starting at 2 p.m. Did you know that we have lots of panels on Sunday? Here are just a few:
If you are planning to enter the Norwescon 46 Masquerade, we need your registration and your audio/video file by March 25. Last-minute registrations are allowed at the pre-masquerade meetings on Friday and Saturday, but it is hard to troubleshoot problems day of. All of the information can be found on the Masquerade web page.
The Norwescon 'Zine (the official daily news sheet for Norwescon 46) is going back to its roots. That means your 'Zine will be interactive and welcomes your submissions to zine@norwescon.org.
What kind of submissions, you ask? (Even if you didn't, we're going to tell you anyway.) We have a couple new columns just waiting for your input. One is called "Blast from the Past," where we'll do a roundup of our favorite geeky films and why we love them (with a focus on the past five decades that Norwescon has been around).
Another is "Con Stories," which are micro stories (just a couple paragraphs) of interesting or funny interactions you have at Norwescon 46. Think: The New York Times' "Metropolitan Diary," and you'll have a good idea of what we're looking for.
Photos are always welcome---costumes, groups having fun, that elusive clear photo of a Sasquatch.
And a perennial favorite: the "Overheard" column. The things you're only going to hear at a sci-fi/fantasy convention. Tidbits of delight that have you chuckling with fannish glee because you aren't in the mundane world.
Send your content and ideas to zine@norwescon.org. And look for the 'Zine each morning of Norwescon 46 at 10 a.m.
We are excited to announce that BritCon is sponsoring several panels at Norwescon! Come enjoy their panels and learn about BritCon and their one day event on August 4, 2024.

We are excited about all the activities at Norwescon, but to make it happen we need volunteers. Everyone has their own unique skill set, so don't worry---we'll find something for you! Adults and teens 14+ are welcome. To volunteer pre-con email personnel@norwescon.org. At con come to the volunteer table located in the lobby!
Here are some specific volunteer needs you can email us about today:
If it is your first or 46th time at Norwescon, stop by the info table in the lobby to pick up a copy of our stunning souvenir program book, add a pronoun sticker to your badge, sign up for workshops, and check out a display of the schedule grid and map of the hotel. Any questions? Just ask!
The Norwescon Little Free Library now has donation ribbons for your badge. If you've ever donated a book, please stop by the table to get yours. Grab a book or two while you're at it!
Thinking about what to pack for Norwescon? Don't forget we are accepting donations of items that are fannish in nature, such as art, jewelry, books, and games, to sell in our art show with all proceeds going to a nonprofit, this year being the Young Black & Brilliant Book Club. Using the transformative power of books, YB&B fosters literacy and life skills for our local youth. Items will be available for sale throughout the convention in the art show. Please stop by to see what we have to offer---it's all for a good cause! If you would like to donate an item, please drop it off in the art show with a staff member. Reach out to us with questions at charities@norwescon.org.
We're looking forward to seeing you at the end of the month at the DoubleTree. Please note that on-site parking fills up quickly. Reg opens at 9 a.m. Thursday and the first program begins at 2 p.m., so take time to familiarize yourself with the various locations. Guidebook has maps! We have dances on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, including the Fae Ball on Saturday. Each year we ask Norwescon members to donate items for sale during the convention to support a chosen nonprofit or to offer as prizes to our hard-working volunteers. This year our chosen nonprofit is the Young Black & Brilliant Book Club. Using the transformative power of books, YB&B fosters literacy and life skills for our local youth. They will be joining us at Norwescon this year.
We accept donations of items that are fannish in nature, such as art, jewelry, books, and games. Items will be available for sale throughout the convention in the art show. Please stop by to see what we have to offer—it’s all for a good cause! If you would like to donate an item, please drop it off in the art show with a staff member. Dr. Raychelle Burks has worked in a crime lab and now teaches and does forensic research, when she isn’t writing her science-meets-true crime column “Trace Analysis,” podcasting, or appearing on television or cons. She is the 2020 recipient of American Chemical Society’s Grady-Stack Award for Interpreting Chemistry for the Public.

Roll Away or Not to Rollway? The SeaTac Fire Department recently revised its safety regulations related to double queen rooms. According to the rules, rollaway beds will no longer be allowed in rooms that come with two beds. This will not affect king rooms or suites. While you can still have up to five individuals in a double queen room, the hotel will not provide that comfortable rollaway that you love.
Did you know? The five-person occupancy limit also applies to king rooms, but there is no occupancy restriction in a suite. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our hotel liaison, Pat, at hotels@norwescon.org.
Our chair spotted some great news from the hotel on the hotel reader board at the last convention committee meeting:
Our DoubleTree Chocolate Chip Cookie is a symbol of our brand's commitment to providing guests with a kind welcome and memorable stay. For over 30 years, it has set us apart from the competition and brought comfort and joy to millions of guests. However, we recognize that there are over 32 million people in the U.S. alone with food allergies who are missing out on this experience.
To ensure we greet all our guests with the same positive check-in experience, we’re pleased to announce that we are partnering with Partake, a minority-woman-owned business, to create a top nine allergen-free option. The new Allergy-Friendly Cookie is free of peanuts, eggs, dairy, soy, tree nuts, sesame, fish, wheat and shellfish, and is certified vegan, gluten-free and Kosher and will be individually wrapped with no need for freezing, baking, or warming. The alternative cookie offer will be a brand standard [106.06.A] across all U.S. properties beginning on National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, August 4, 2023. Offering guests the choice of our Original Cookie or allergy-friendly helps makes sure no guest misses out on our cookie welcome.

Jim Butcher is the author of The Dresden Files, Codex Alera, and a new steampunk series, The Cinder Spires. His resume includes a laundry list of skills which were useful a couple centuries ago, and he plays guitar quite badly. An avid gamer, he plays tabletop games in varying systems, a variety of video games on PC and console, and LARPs whenever he can make time for it.
Jim goes by the moniker Longshot in a number of online locales. He came by this name in the early 1990s when he decided he would become a published author.Usually only three in 1000 who make such an attempt actually manage to become published; of those, only one in 10 make enough money to call it a living. The sale of a second series was the breakthrough that allowed him beat the long odds against attaining a career as a novelist.
All the same, he refuses to change his nickname.

Join Norwescon’s official book club on December 11 for Krampus: The Yule Lord by Brom and a holiday brunch. In January we’re back to virtual meetings on January 16 for Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. Two fantastic authors of the Pacific Northwest! Go to our Facebook group for more information.

Hey, made you look! No, the DoubleTree hasn’t changed the name of the hotel, but I sure will keep asking…. Maybe just for April 5–9, 2023. We’ll see.
I’d like to share a few things happening that you should know for booking a room. The hotel is currently taking reservations, and we encourage you to book a room as soon as possible. This will help Norwescon plan for the convention, from budgeting to programing.
When placing your reservation, please use the links from our Hotel page, or use the code “Norwescon,” “Norwescon 2023,” or “Sci-Fi Convention.” The rates for a standard hotel room, either two queens or one king bed, are $152 per night for up to four people, with an extra $10 to add a fifth person, which is the max per room. Don’t forget to ask if you need a rollaway bed—they go fast! These prices are the same regardless of where your room is located in the hotel. Please keep in mind that the hotel will try its best to accommodate location requests, but it isn’t always possible due to outside booking (non-convention folks) or other factors.
The prices for suites are:
These rooms are held by Norwescon, so after placing your reservation go to our website to ask to be assigned to a suite. If you’re interested in why we do it this way, send me an email for more information. If you plan to have an open-door party, you must request a room in the party wing, which will be Wing 5 and 5b of the hotel. You must register your party onsite with the convention office before it begins. If you are having a closed-door party, meaning by-invitation-only, it can be anywhere you wish.
The other big news is that Norwescon and DoubleTree have completed discussions and signed contracts for the next three years. Norwescon and the DoubleTree have a strong partnership. They not only consider us an important part of their business, but above all truly appreciate us and our members. It’s almost as fun for them as it is for us! The hotel staff look forward to us arriving more than any other convention. Take my word for it, they go above and beyond for us.
Well, that is it for now. If you have questions, please email me at hotel@norwescon.org and I’ll be happy to help.
Thanks!
Pat Booze, hotel liaison Norwescon 45

Norwescon is working on new policies and procedures to make our Safety and Code of Conduct processes more transparent to the membership. Details of the whole process are available at norwescon.org/about/safety and will be discussed at ConCom meetings.
Key changes already in draft include posting safety updates to Twitter during the convention, clearer policies around which Code of Conduct violations will cause removal from the convention, and posting public visible updates on reports of Code of Conduct incidents, including brief summaries of reports and the status of the investigation. If you have ideas that could help make our convention a safer place, please send them to safety@norwescon.org or bring them up at the next ConCom meeting.
The Member Services department is looking for a teen or young adult to run the new Teen Lounge, an open area in Concourse One.
