We've heard of at least(!) three other engagements this weekend; the only one we have submitted is that of Laurie Reynolds (Rowan Silverwing) and Jacob Sullens (The Mad Potter), engaged on stage at the Fannish Fetish Fashion Show. The post-it with the names on says it's true, and that's good enough for us!

Ten steps to a successful encounter
Connect. Flirting is about connecting with someone. There are many possible kinds of connection: romance, friendship, business, casual. Who knows? If you can approach each person with an open mind about that unique communication, more doors will open.
Move. In order to connect, you have to talk, walk, and approach the other person. Do something, even if it's not perfect. Standing and watching and thinking about what you would do if you were brave enough is not flirting. Move.
Smile. At least think a smile. You can also smile, but more important is to put yourself in the mindset of smiling. Go into a flirting encounter with a smile in your approach, and more people will welcome the connection.
Speak. Now that you're moving and smiling, say something. No matter how shy you are, you have to actually talk to the person you are interested in. Good openings can be simple! Talk about the location, event, how you came to be there, the weather, clothes, jewelry, kids, pets, or even how shy you are.
Laugh. Humor is a powerful way to connect with people. Use your own style of humor to find people who have similar tastes. They might laugh or they might not, but either is good. Maybe they're laughing inside. Maybe they're shy. Or maybe they don't get you at all - better to know early. Bring your humor.
Be sincere. When in doubt, say something upbeat and pleasant. When in great doubt, say something sincere. Most people can sense if you are being genuine. Sincerity is super attractive.
Listen. Good listening and attention to that other person is the doorway to connection. Listen to what they say, what they don't say, to their body language and tone and everything else. The most effective flirters are the best listeners.
Practice. To get better at flirting, do more of it. Waiting in line, walking on the street, at the gym or the market, talk to those around you. Say hello, ask them their opinion, offer a compliment. Make contact.
Get rejected. Notice when someone isn't interested, or is saying "no" in a subtle or not-so-subtle way. Step back graciously! It's good to get rejected, so be proud of yourself. If someone laughs at you (not with), turns away, or says something mean, you get to increase your "I got rejected today!" score. You're getting out there. Be proud of yourself.
Courage! Most people are nervous when they talk to new people so you're in good company. Being brave doesn't mean not being scared -- it means engaging anyway. It means taking risks and meeting new people. Get yourself out there. Engage.

A Special Offer for Norwescon Members
Our Artist Guest of Honor John Picacio is making available to Norwescon members very limited edition prints of his artwork from the 2012 George R.R. Martin: A Song of Ice and Fire Calendar. These prints debuted just last weekend at World Horror and we are the next to take advantage of this amazing opportunity.
These five amazing prints are printed on archival paper from the renowned company of Hahnemuhle, who have been making paper since 1584. There will only be 100 of each print produced, each print is signed and numbered, and the most extraordinary thing about owning one of these prints is that John created each print myself, by hand.
Come by and check out Eddard Stark, Jon Snow and Ghost, Sansa Stark and the Hound, Bran Stark, and Melisandre -- any of which would make a wonderful addition to your collections.

From one person to another: “I forgot what it was for—” “There’s that lubricant at work again!”
Norwescon 35 Zine #3 4/8/12
By maydela | October 13, 2010
The origins of Norwescon are easy to find thanks to the NW Convention History wiki set up by Don Glover, but I thought it would be fun to do a series of posts looking into where the people who started Norwescon and our former guests are now.
Norwescon was originally organized by around 16 people. For comparison, NWC 32 had a convention committee over 100 people. For the first two years, it was chaired by Gregory Bennett, who founded the Artemis Project in 1994, a private project working to set up a colony on the moon by 2002.
For the first four years, Norwescon had three Guests of Honor. The Guest of Honor for Norwescon 1 was Theodore Sturgeon, who died in 1985 in Eugene, Oregon. He is best known for the novel More Than Human; Sturgeon’s Law, “Nothing is always absolutely so,” and Sturgeon’s Revelation (included in the previous link), “Ninety percent of everything is crud.” His last published work was Godbody, which was published after his death.
The Fan Guest of Honor was John D. Berry, who is currently working as an editor and typographer in Seattle. He designed the program for the Seattle World Fantasy Con and is currently the president of AtypI.
The Toastmaster was Alan E. Nourse, who died in 1992. He was a physician and author, whose science fiction writing helped him pay for medical school. He practiced medicine in North Bend, Washington. His sci-fi works were mainly about medicine and psionics, and included a novel called The Bladerunner, which inspired the title of the movie but not, of course, the plot. His book Star Surgeon and a number of his short stories are available in free audio book format on Librivox*.
* Librivox is a free audio book program that is no way affiliated with Norwescon. Available stories are all in the public domain. Stories are usually read by multiple volunteer readers, with varying audio qualities. Enjoy!

In my last post, I talked about how the committee that organizes Norwescon has grown, but I failed to mention attendance. The first Norwescon had an estimated attendance of 415, the second 725 – almost double! Last year, Norwescon 33 had an estimated attendance of 3,349 and we almost ran out of badge blanks. Currently, 110% of our room block is reserved, so if you are planning to attend, now would be a great time to register. A full weekend membership is only $45 if you buy it before December 31st. Visit our membership page for more information.
The Chair for Norwescon 2 was once again Gregory Bennett. I’m afraid I don’t have anything new to say about him. I think a good way to get more information about the beginning of Norwescon would be to do interviews with the people who started it. If you have any questions you think I should ask, please let me know in the comments!
The Guest of Honor was Philip José Farmer. He died in 2009 after a prolific writing career of over 60 years. He wrote under a number of pseudonyms, as well as under his own name. He is best known for both the Riverworld and World of Tiers series. Farmer often worked with religious themes, and he is also regarded as breaking the taboo on sexual themes in science fiction.
The Fan Guest of Honor was Loren MacGregor, who was born and raised in Seattle and currently lives in Eugene, Oregon. He wrote The Net for the Ace Science Fiction Specials series. He also edited and contributed to a number of zines* and other fan publications in the ’70s and is currently active on a number of internet forums.
The Toast Master was Elizabeth A Lynn. She mostly wrote fantasy works, and is credited for being one of the first authors to write sympathetic gay and lesbian characters. She lives in San Francisco. Her latest published works are Dragon’s Winter (1999) and Dragon’s Treasure (2004), the first two books of a trilogy. Dragon’s Winter got some bad reviews, so I wonder if that means that the trilogy will never be finished. Then again, the gap between those first two books was almost as long.
*Older zines are really hard to research online. If anyone has an idea how to find more information on zines from the ’70s and ’80s, I would really appreciate it.
Norwescon 3 was held March 28-30, 1980 at the Hyatt House in SeaTac. Because of the amount of convention space available at the venue, there were no more then 3 rooms of programming running at one time, with the occasional panel tucked into an odd space. At our current location, we have over 15 regularly used programming rooms, and multiple areas used as fill in space, like the rotunda between the Cascades and the Evergreen rooms. This doesn’t include the Art Show, Dealer’s Room, or the space up at Maxis.
In the Norwescon 3 film room there were movies played on a projector with actual film. We also hosted a premier of the George C Scott movie Changeling. Radio Shack donated 10 TRS-80’s to go along with fan donated systems for the computer gaming room.
The Chair for Norwescon 3 was Stephen T Bard. He found a notice in a comic book shop from Gregory Bennett looking for people to start a science fiction club, and was one of the people who helped start Norwescon. His son, Damon Bard, got his start as a teenager in the Norwescon Art Show and now works designing and sculpting characters for animated films.
The Guest of Honor was Alfred Bester, an author and scriptwriter born in Manhattan to Austrian immigrant parents. He is best known for his Hugo award winning novel The Demolished Man, a crime novel set in 2301 where the world is policed by psychics. Bester has a large legacy in our culture, most notably in the pseudonymous Psi Cop, Alfred Bester on Babylon 5. He’s also been referenced on Firefly, The Simpsons and by Stephen King in his novel Lisey’s Story. Speaking of Stephen King, he was a pro at Norwescon 3. This was before his career had really taken off, when he attended a number of Norwescons as both a pro and a regular attendee.
The FGoh was Frederik Pohl who wrote under multiple pseudonyms until the early 50’s, although he used a few different psuedonyms until the early 60’s even after he had begun writing under his own name. He is the only person who has won a Hugo award for both writing and editing, he has also won the Hugo Award for Best Fan Writing for his blog, The Way the Future Blogs, where he writes about his memories in SF fandom and his political opinions.
The Toastmaster was Theodore Sturgeon, who was GoH at Norwescon 1. I don’t have anything new to say about his work, but I would like to direct your attention to the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award, awarded at the University of Kansas each year for best short science fiction. The winner for 2010 was James Morrow’s Shambling Towards Hiroshima. The awards committee is looking for serious SF readers who are willing to offer a fresh perspective in their nominations process, just contact Chris McKitterick if you are interested in learning more.
The art for the Program Book cover was created by Victoria (Poyser) Lisi. She lived in Olympia at the time, and has been awarded two fan Hugos for her book cover work. Currently she lives in Colorado with her husband James Lisi, a landscape artist. They collaborate on fine art and she teaches art at Aims Community College.
