A New Way to Volunteer!

Norwescon is excited to announce a new way for convention members to sign up to volunteer before the convention starts. Register as a volunteer online to get the most out of your Norwescon 41 experience!

Benefits of signing up prior to the convention include:

Select your areas of interest. This helps us match you with the department you want!

List times you're available to volunteer during the convention and choose your own shifts! You will be able to log into the volunteer site before the convention begins to see a list of available shifts in each department. You'll be able to plan your volunteering around the panels you want to attend at the convention.

Skip the volunteer sign up line at the convention! Once you sign up for a shift, just show up at the location you're scheduled to volunteer. The team will have forms for you to track your times so you still get credit for your hours!

Get started by visiting our volunteer page to register! When you sign up, you'll notice that the calendar may not list shifts yet, as we're still in the planning phase of the convention. Please mark your area(s) of interest and we'll send you an e-mail as shifts for your department of choice become available. Can't wait until March 29? The convention welcomes volunteers throughout the year. Visit the website for upcoming ConCom meetings!

Hotel Rooms Still Available!

Now is the perfect time to secure your room for Norwescon. Plenty of rooms are still available on Thursday through Sunday at the Norwescon rate of $129. To book now, follow this link.

Welcome Our New Artist Guest of Honor!

Our previous Artist Guest of Honor, Wayne Barlowe, had to cancel his attendance at Norwescon 41 due to a business opportunity he could not turn down. Feel free to visit her website and check out some of her amazing art at: www.galendara.com Welcome, Galen!

Art in Action Applications Are Now Open!

Artists, crafters, creatives, and costumers: applications for Art in Action at Norwescon 41 are now being accepted!

Art in Action is a unique place for artists and creators to come together with Norwescon members. It provides an area for artists and creators to show and teach Norwescon members about what they love creating. This year, we are excited to announce that Art in Action will have a spotlight on costuming! In addition to our always-welcome and always-fabulous artists and creators, we encourage costumers to sign up and demonstrate a costuming skill they particularly enjoy or are good at. These can range from pattern drafting to thermoplastics to fabric painting to prosthetics...the sky is the limit!

Please visit the Art in Action page to request your spot and demonstrate the things you love to create at Norwescon 41!

Remember, all youth track participants under the age of 11 must be supervised by their adult guardian.

Uncovering Mysteries

Blue Rose - On Stage!

A decade ago, Blue Rose shook up the role-playing game scene with its vision of romantic fantasy and inclusive gaming. Now the world of Aldea returns in a new edition from our spotlight publisher, Green Ronin. Come and hear the Sovereign's Finest as they protect their homeland of Aldis from threats like the shadowy Kingdom of Kern, and the fanatical Theocracy of Jarzon, as well as monsters and artifacts from the cruel reign of the Sorcerer Kings. Aided by the rhydan (their psychic animal allies), the champions of the Kingdom of the Blue Rose safeguard the light of the world against the power of shadow.

Come and watch Joseph Carriker (line developer, Blue Rose), Crystal Frasier (line developer, Mutants & Masterminds), Tanya DePass (director, Need Diverse Games, non-profit), and Wesley Schneider (editor-in- chief at Paizo Inc.) as they play this award-winning game!

Burlesque: Death Aboard the ICS Golden Thong

The captain and her crew thought it was a wonderful day to start another trip to Seti Ralpha V aboard the prestigious interstellar cruise ship, the Golden Thong. And it was, until someone got themselves murdered. If that wasn't bad enough for our intrepid captain, it threatened to blossom into a galactic scandal! Will Captain Smirk figure out who the murderer is before the quadrant erupts into war? Will Ensign Crusher ever get the respect she deserves? Will the rubber-headed alien look even remotely convincing? Will Security Officer Starbooty look good on set? Answers to these questions and more at Death Aboard the ICS Golden Thong!

Death Aboard the ICS Golden Thong is a burlesque whodunnit set upon the final frontier, an homage to every bad mystery trope, and complete with a butler droid! Morgan La May stars as Captain Smirk, Bella La Blanc as Ambassador Lube-wanna Troi, and Nikolai Knight as Security Officer Starbooty! Also staring are Sophie B. Fawkins, Candy Apples, Mandy Flame, Tawdry Quirks, Lola Moondust, Whisper De Corvo, Wicked Scarlett, and special guest star, Lilith Van Dyke!

Death Aboard the ICS Golden Thong is for Norwescon members 18 years of age and older, Friday, March 30, in Grand 2 and Grand 3! Doors will open at 9:00 pm.

Norwescon Charity Auction

What will you find there? Original art, prints, and books from current and past GoHs and pros, collectibles, toys, jewelry, games... all sorts of lovely stuff donated by our dealers and fellow fen!

All proceeds are given to Northwest Harvest, Norwescon's official charity. Northwest Harvest is committed to ending hunger in Washington state and truly serves everyone in need. Norwescon is proud to work with them. Come and find a treasure to take home AND help others in need!

Keith & Alan's Movie News & Previews are Seeing Double!

Back for their 12th year Alan Halfhill and partner Keith Johnson, are delighted to bring their unique brand of movie previews and news to Norwescon. They commit countless hours of behind-the-scenes toil to bring you the latest movie news, rumors and trailers out of Hollywood and beyond. But they are so much more than that. They highlight the latest trends, innovations, and challenges, and touch on the wider entertainment culture: TV shows, home video, theme parks, the whole gamut! Now how much would you pay?

This year you get TWO opportunities to load up your media memory banks. The first is bright and early Friday morning, 10 am to noon in Grand 3. Then, an after-party meetup at 3 pm Friday in the convention lounge (room 7106), for things they didn't have time for in the main Friday show. And the triumph of their Sunday show, which preview-going veterans know is more free-form, and features the must-be- experienced-to-be-believed "Why? Why? WHY?," Sunday at noon in Evergreen 1 & 2. They make it easy to get your weekend dose of full-frontal media mayhem!

13th Annual Science Fiction & Fantasy Short Film Festival

If you love the world of live-action science fiction, fantasy, and horror-tinged short films, don't miss the Science Fiction & Fantasy Short Film Festival (SFFSFF) on March 24, 2018! MoPOP, in partnership with SIFF, proudly brings you the artistic excellence of filmmakers who are influencing the narrative of unconventional films from around the globe.

Sign Up to Volunteer Now!

Norwescon is always in need of volunteers during the convention. This year we are excited to offer you the ability to sign up to volunteer before the convention starts, giving you the capability to better plan out your con weekend!! If you're interested, sign up right here!!

Don't Panic If You Lose Your Badge - Just Find Your Wallet!

Sew it on, clip it, pin it, but don't lose it. We want to make sure you understand that if you lose your membership badge, you will be charged a $65 replacement cost.

In the past we have been more flexible based on the circumstances, but unfortunately the increase in lost badges and some of the very creative stories being presented have made it clear that we've got to be more diligent on the enforcement of this policy. Now, things happen, and our registration team will work with you, but unless an Aerodactyl, Dragonair, or Onix ate your badge, be aware and plan to Ponta up for a new badge.

Movie News & Previews Is a Must- See!

Movie News & Previews isn't just a bunch of commercials! Alan Halfhill and Keith Johnson have been bringing their unique presentation to Norwescon for 12 years. They live to ferret out those little tidbits of fun-to-know behind-the-scenes news and analysis of the larger picture (no pun intended). And to be entertaining!

The first show starts early from 10 a.m.-noon on Friday morning in Grand 3. The Sunday show triumph is noon-2 p.m. in Evergreen 1&2. These shows are different! Friday will feature straight-ahead news and previews for two hours. The Sunday show is freeform and features the must-be-experienced-to-be-believed, "why? Why? WHY?" Come see the latest from Jurassic World, The Incredibles, Deadpool, Alita, Farenheit 451, Rampage, Red Dwarf 12, Teen Titans, Ready Player One, Pacific Rim: Uprising, and Avengers: Infinity War, plus other cool finds like Anna and the Apocalypse and Mortal Engines. They'll talk about Disney's Star Wars Land (now to include a hotel!), Game of Thrones, The Orville, Firefly, and the latest from the Star Wars franchise. On Sunday, they take time to talk about those remakes, reboots, and sequels you knew you didn't want but are getting anyway.

Because two shows aren't enough, there is a Movie News Discussion Group after party on Friday at 3 p.m. in the Convention Lounge with more in-depth information and discussion. Come to the whole set!

Norwescon Scavenger Hunt: Knights Templar vs. Archaeologists

Choose a team and get the most stamps. Who will win in this con rivalry? You can participate in the hunt by visiting the scavenger hunt club table throughout the weekend. Attend the Herocorps event on Saturday at 4 p.m. for the final showdown. The more stamps you get will help you beat the treasure hunt and gain advantage over your rivals. One person will win a grand prize.

Cards Against Humanity Tournament Is Back!

Play the party game for horrible people at our CAH tournament on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. in Maxi's Ballroom. Win prizes and earn the title of most horrible person at con.

Come Stuff With Us!

Please join us on Sunday, March 25 for fun and games as we take pieces of paper, paperback books, buttons and coupons and marry them together to form the packets that everybody receives at Registration. The more people we have, the faster it will go. Be the first in your neighborhood to see what sort of goodies everyone will receive. Cop a button or two advertising the next big movie. We might even have the latest programming grids on the wall for your perusal.

Working at the stuffing party counts towards hours worked at the con. Norwescon volunteers receive perks like early seating at the Masquerade and are entered into drawings for many items donated by Norwescon dealers. The drawings take place early Sunday afternoon of the con.

First Page Idol - Just kidding!

Electronic submissions for First Page Idol are actually due Friday, March 30th, at 12:00 noon, not March 25th. Electronic submissions will be read aloud at the panel.

The panel itself will be at 2:00 p.m., not 4:00 p.m. as originally posted.

If you're still not sure about signing up, you can bring a printed version with you, in your hand, to the panel at 2:00 p.m.

Either way, please provide a single page in standard manuscript format: 12-point font, double-spaced, 1-inch margins.

Example: https://www.shunn.net/format/story.html

DRONE - Short Film

Unfortunately, Balloon Animals for Adults has been cancelled, but we have added a screening of the short film, DRONE, in Evergreen 1&2 on Friday at 7:00 p.m., and the director will be available after the show to answer questions about the process of making the film. We hope to see you there!

Uncovering Mysteries

Norwescon 42 Registration and Hotel Reservations Coming Soon!

Our membership registration system for Norwescon 42 will be up once our Registration team has updated the public-facing side of things (as opposed to the private- network version we had running on Sunday of this year's convention) and turned it on. This should happen fairly soon and we'll be sure to let you know as soon as we can.

Hotel reservations will take just a little bit longer. Because Norwescon takes place over Easter weekend, the next Norwescon is actually a few weeks more than one year away (April 18-21, 2019) and the Hilton's reservation system doesn't allow reservations more than one year out. Hotel reservations won't be available until at least April 22nd this year. Once again, as soon as we've confirmed that the system is up and working, we'll make the announcement on the website and our social media pages!

Norwescon 41 Art Show Awards!

The Norwescon Art Show is proud to announce this year's art show award winners. We would like to thank all of the artists for their outstanding contribution to this year's show.

We would like to thank this year's panel of judges: Galen Dara, Jeff LaCoss, Don Lacky, and Doug Booze for their generous time and knowledge in helping judge this year's show. Every year we recognize one of our art show volunteers for going above and beyond in support of the art show. Please join is in congratulating this year's recipient of the art show apprentice award, Alex Demboski.

Onions and Roses!

Did you experience something that went really well at the convention (a rose)? We'd love to hear from you! Do we have an opportunity to improve for next year (an onion)? We'd love to hear from you! Your feedback and perspective are vital to the continuing success of Norwescon. If you would like to share an onion or a rose, you can email onionsandroses@norwescon.org or provide your feedback using this survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/7K8M9QG (survey may be taken multiple times).

We hope to hear from you!

Locus Awards Weekend!

The Locus Awards are a science fiction and fantasy literary award determined by polls of readers of Locus magazine since 1971. The awards are presented at a banquet in Seattle, Washington (across from the Seattle Center) and emceed by the witty and entertaining Connie Willis. Highlights of the event include an autograph session, panel discussions with leading authors, and an annual Hawaiian shirt contest. Attending memberships are $55 until May 1, which includes a six-month digital subscription to Locus Online from February to the August 2018 issue. In addition, the Locus Writers Workshop will take place during the same weekend with instructors Connie Willis and Yoon Ha Lee. More details are available at Locus Awards Weekend. Norwescon is proud to be a sponsor of the Locus Awards Weekend.

Do You Have Programming Ideas for Norwescon 42?

We will begin considering ideas for Norwescon 42 panels over the summer of 2018. If you have ideas, we recommend getting them to us by September so we can give them our best consideration; we try to have our schedule more or less set by December of each year.

If you would like to suggest a panel, presentation, or workshop for Norwescon 42, we require:

A title (no more than 8 words)

A description of the event (no more than 100 words)

Technical requirements (if any)

If you're presenting this idea with the intention of participating, information about yourself and why you're qualified to give this presentation or workshop.

PLEASE NOTE: If you submit an idea, we consider it fair game, in whole or in part. We won't be tracking where it came from, nor notify you if we use it. We might chop it up and use it for parts, combine it with other ideas, re-write it, or use it exactly the way you submitted it. If we do use it, we can't guarantee who will be on it by the time the convention rolls around. Basically, by submitting the form, you've given it to us to do with as we like. Thanks!
