Ten steps to a successful encounter
Connect. Flirting is about connecting with someone. There are many possible kinds of connection: romance, friendship, business, casual. Who knows? If you can approach each person with an open mind about that unique communication, more doors will open.
Move. In order to connect, you have to talk, walk, and approach the other person. Do something, even if it's not perfect. Standing and watching and thinking about what you would do if you were brave enough is not flirting. Move.
Smile. At least think a smile. You can also smile, but more important is to put yourself in the mindset of smiling. Go into a flirting encounter with a smile in your approach, and more people will welcome the connection.
Speak. Now that you're moving and smiling, say something. No matter how shy you are, you have to actually talk to the person you are interested in. Good openings can be simple! Talk about the location, event, how you came to be there, the weather, clothes, jewelry, kids, pets, or even how shy you are.
Laugh. Humor is a powerful way to connect with people. Use your own style of humor to find people who have similar tastes. They might laugh or they might not, but either is good. Maybe they're laughing inside. Maybe they're shy. Or maybe they don't get you at all - better to know early. Bring your humor.
Be sincere. When in doubt, say something upbeat and pleasant. When in great doubt, say something sincere. Most people can sense if you are being genuine. Sincerity is super attractive.
Listen. Good listening and attention to that other person is the doorway to connection. Listen to what they say, what they don't say, to their body language and tone and everything else. The most effective flirters are the best listeners.
Practice. To get better at flirting, do more of it. Waiting in line, walking on the street, at the gym or the market, talk to those around you. Say hello, ask them their opinion, offer a compliment. Make contact.
Get rejected. Notice when someone isn't interested, or is saying "no" in a subtle or not-so-subtle way. Step back graciously! It's good to get rejected, so be proud of yourself. If someone laughs at you (not with), turns away, or says something mean, you get to increase your "I got rejected today!" score. You're getting out there. Be proud of yourself.
Courage! Most people are nervous when they talk to new people so you're in good company. Being brave doesn't mean not being scared -- it means engaging anyway. It means taking risks and meeting new people. Get yourself out there. Engage.

Due to the lovely institution of Daylight Saving time the Hugo Nominations will take place at 1pm NOT noon.
Who ARE The 156, you ask? Well the full answer is a bit too long for right here, but the short answer is those silly people who keep "shield crashing" their forearms wherever they spot one another. Put another way, they are 156 attendees (one not even a year old!) who are part of an analog social networking viral pyramid scheme game (really it's multi-level marketing and all legal).
The Beyond Reality Costumer's Guild is sponsoring a raffle. You can win your choice of a sewing machine, a leather jacket, or an awesome Costumer's Sewstravaganza Kit; a 3-drawer container stuffed with trims, ribbons, beads, notions, patterns and crafting accessories, with an additional container of fabric and books. Raffle is in support of an animal charity. Drawing will be held Sunday noon; need not be present to win (but must be able to pick up items by 2 PM Sunday.) For tickets or more info, visit the BRCG table in the lobby.
No Movie News & Previews panel today, but we will be back Sunday after The Fandance Film Festival at 2pm with our last show. News, rumors, previews, swag - it will all be there.

How beautiful a new sun is when it rises,
flashing out its greeting, like an explosion!
Happy, whoever hails with sweet emotion
its descent, nobler than a dream, to our eyes!
I remember! I've seen all, flower, furrow, fountain,
swoon beneath its look, like a throbbing heart
Let's run quickly, it's late, towards the horizon,
to catch at least one slanting ray as it departs!
But I pursue the vanishing God in vain:
irresistible Night establishes its sway,
full of shudders, black, dismal, cold:
an odour of the tomb floats in the shadow,
at the swamp's edge, feet faltering I go,
bruising damp slugs, and unexpected toads.

Our front desk team works in the Security Office handling walk-in reports, lost and found, checking in and out of equipment. Also, provides backup coverage as a call receiver.
Dispatcher 2s are the backbone of the dispatch staff, they commonly perform the duties of a ConCom Dispatcher, during any shift, and can work as the Security Dispatch during 'non-peak hours'.
Assists with overseeing all convention events security staffing needs and coordination. Assists with ensuring that proper staffing levels are met to cover all convention events. Assists with wrangling back-up units if/as needed during con.
These people do the stuff and make things happen (or not happen as the case may be) all over the place. See also description for Patrol Staff. Needs to check into dispatch or security office at least once per hour (in person, possibly via radio).
The patrol staff are the eyes and ears of, and deterrent for problems during, the convention. Unarmed patrols help to keep the peace, address crowd control issues; assist with lost/found items/people; noise superseding insanity levels; help to maintain a civility level among con drunkards after hours; assist little old peoples across crowded hallways; and refrain from running in the halls.
Assistant Photographers are responsible for photographing convention panels, events, and attendees. They will work a 3- to 5-hour shift each day. Photographing outside of the assigned shift is not required, though certainly allowed (and possibly even encouraged).
Help us repeat the success of years past and volunteer!
Come on down to the volunteer lounge and lend a hand.
Thank you,
Elana

Artists' Alley is seeking artists to participate this year at Norwescon. We welcome a wide range of crafts and artists who are willing to share their skills and knowledge with other con-goers. We hope to educate and grow interest in what you do by connecting you with the "non-artist" who enjoys the same sci-fi/fantasy geek things that you do.
More information and sign-up form here.

There is still time to prepare your costume for the Masquerade! Be creative! You know you always wanted to make something out of cardboard boxes or that weird packing material that came with your television! (Seriously, just Google "costume from cardboard box" and you'll see some amazing stuff. A little duct tape and paint and you're good to go!) The rules and forms are on the website. We hope to see you there!
Our dance themes this year range from celebrating the mighty Thor's Day to reveling in our survival of the Mayan Apocalypse by way of dressing in togas, and on to the classic hoedown. We are also bringing back the Under 21 dance for the younger crowd so bring your dancing shoes and prepare to shimmy!
The scavenger hunt is going digital this year! Grab your cell phone or digital camera and get ready to comb the convention for items that you think will fit the list. Interpretation is half the fun!
This year we want to acknowledge the groups actually out there trying to save the world and make it a better place for all of us. If you know of any special groups you would like to have at the convention, please drop them a line or contact us at specialevents@norwescon.org. We have some amazing organizations in the area and would love to showcase them!

Execs for Norwescon 36
The Norwescon Executive team is set in July of each convention year. They immediately begin filling Convention Committee (ConCom) positions in their areas of responsibility. On July first there are only thirteen individuals on the ConCom org chart, by convention time there are 200+. If you're interested in a position on the Norwescon 36 ConCom please contact the exec in charge of the area.
Unsure who is responsible for an area in which you are interested? Check out the org chart and then email the executive team member to let them know of your interest. Remember, all positions are re-hired annually. Let your exec know what you want to do. Unsure if you're ready to committ to the ConCom? Contact volunteers@norwescon.org for other opportunities.
