Elections were held for the officers of Norwescon 36 (2013) on Saturday May 12th with Keith Johnson, LouAnna Valentine, and Doug Booze on this year's election committee.
Peggy Stewart was elected to the chair position.
Brad Nelson is the vice-chair.
The new members of the GoH Selection committee are:
SunnyJim Morgan and Pearl Young.
Thank you to everyone who participated in this year's election and congratulations to the winners.
As Chair and Vice Chair, Brad and I would like to announce and welcome the Norwescon 36 Executive Team. We have finished our interviews and have selected an excellent team of execs. Norwescon 36 has many changes this year with the new registration system and 501(c)(3) and this team is definitely up to them. The team is now looking to filling out their staff and would love to hear from you about positions you are interested in for NWC36.
We all look forward to seeing past and future volunteers (ConCom too) at the volunteer picnic!
Thank you,
Peggy Stewart
Execs for Norwescon 36
The Norwescon Executive team is set in July of each convention year. They immediately begin filling Convention Committee (ConCom) positions in their areas of responsibility. On July first there are only thirteen individuals on the ConCom org chart, by convention time there are 200+. If you're interested in a position on the Norwescon 36 ConCom please contact the exec in charge of the area.
Unsure who is responsible for an area in which you are interested? Check out the org chart and then email the executive team member to let them know of your interest. Remember, all positions are re-hired annually. Let your exec know what you want to do. Unsure if you're ready to committ to the ConCom? Contact volunteers@norwescon.org for other opportunities.
Norwescon is a science, science fiction and fantasy convention that takes place on Easter Weekend each year. We are an all-volunteer organization and always have room for more dedicated volunteers. Without members, though, there would be no reason to hold a convention; thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Norwescon Publications Team

Volunteering!
Every year hundreds of people come together to make Norwescon a success. Last year, 142 attendees donated a total of 620 hours of their time in between the panels and events they attended, to help keep the convention running smoothly. This averages to just over 4 hours per member.
As you begin to plan your convention experience for this next year, please consider giving back to the convention a little of your time.So whether you have 30 minutes to spare, or a few hours to kill, come on down to the volunteer lounge and lend a hand. It's what makes Norwescon such a success every year!

nwcMUSIC Play Event
I am hosting an nwcMUSIC event on October 28th, from 2-8pm. It's a play event at the house - what filkers call a house filk, similar to what hiphop calls a cypher. It's not entirely unlike an Irish session, for the traditionalists.
It's a gathering for everybody who wants to come out and take turns playing/performing. There's no stage, and no audience - well, no specific one, anyway. People come hang out together; there'll be a circle of chairs, everybody plays. And that's the point: participation. Doing it for the fun of doing it.
It's also going to be a bit of a preview of nwcMUSIC and Norwescon, with flyers and such; there's a good chance that a number of nwcMUSIC attending professionals will put in an appearance.
I really want this to be beyond the normal sort of house filk, or even the normal cypher, even though both of those are really cool. I want this to be a crossover event, because in the end, what nwcMUSIC is about. The reason I do this event is participatory culture, and the gathering of the geek tribes Norwescon has always been - moreso, still, than any other convention in Seattle.
And I don't see why we can't do that for geekmusic, too! So:
When: Sunday, October 28th, 2pm-8pm.
Where: Kenmore, Washington
Bus service: 10 minute walk
RSVP to: music@norwescon.org to garner address and directions
We have cats, and used to have birds, but will run a HEPA filter to help with that. There is a flight of stairs up to our front door, but they're wide. Once you're up here, everything you need is on one level.
- Dara

Our front desk team works in the Security Office handling walk-in reports, lost and found, checking in and out of equipment. Also, provides backup coverage as a call receiver.
Dispatcher 2s are the backbone of the dispatch staff, they commonly perform the duties of a ConCom Dispatcher, during any shift, and can work as the Security Dispatch during 'non-peak hours'.
Assists with overseeing all convention events security staffing needs and coordination. Assists with ensuring that proper staffing levels are met to cover all convention events. Assists with wrangling back-up units if/as needed during con.
These people do the stuff and make things happen (or not happen as the case may be) all over the place. See also description for Patrol Staff. Needs to check into dispatch or security office at least once per hour (in person, possibly via radio).
The patrol staff are the eyes and ears of, and deterrent for problems during, the convention. Unarmed patrols help to keep the peace, address crowd control issues; assist with lost/found items/people; noise superseding insanity levels; help to maintain a civility level among con drunkards after hours; assist little old peoples across crowded hallways; and refrain from running in the halls.
Assistant Photographers are responsible for photographing convention panels, events, and attendees. They will work a 3- to 5-hour shift each day. Photographing outside of the assigned shift is not required, though certainly allowed (and possibly even encouraged).

How beautiful a new sun is when it rises,
flashing out its greeting, like an explosion!
Happy, whoever hails with sweet emotion
its descent, nobler than a dream, to our eyes!
I remember! I've seen all, flower, furrow, fountain,
swoon beneath its look, like a throbbing heart
Let's run quickly, it's late, towards the horizon,
to catch at least one slanting ray as it departs!
But I pursue the vanishing God in vain:
irresistible Night establishes its sway,
full of shudders, black, dismal, cold:
an odour of the tomb floats in the shadow,
at the swamp's edge, feet faltering I go,
bruising damp slugs, and unexpected toads.

Maxie's Lounge at the top of the tower will once again be open exclusively to Norwescon members on Friday and Saturday nights during the convention. Be sure to bring your IDs and come on up for some 21+ entertainment. We have some great surprises lined up for you this year!
We are excited to let you all know we have over 140 hours of scheduled games! D&D 3/4/Next, Settlers, Call of Cthulu and Pathfinder, to name just a few. We also have two Kickstarter Games to try out; Cheapass Games and Game Smiths LLC. Hurry and get your game scheduled now! The Scheduled Gaming signup forms are on the website, if you want to run a card or board game (or many) fill out this form.
We are accepting any charitable donations for the game room to be used for the Norwescon Scheduled Gaming Library and of course, door prizes. Those who donate will be recognized in the Scheduled Gaming Room as well as in some of the Scheduled Gaming Advertisements this year. Contact Norwescon charities to donate and mak enote that your donation is for Scheduled Gaming.
There is still time to prepare your costume for the Masquerade! Be creative! You know you always wanted to make something out of cardboard boxes or that weird packing material that came with your television! (Seriously, just Google "costume from cardboard box" and you'll see some amazing stuff. A little duct tape and paint and you're good to go!) The rules and forms are on the website. We hope to see you there!
Our dance themes this year range from celebrating the mighty Thor's Day to reveling in our survival of the Mayan Apocalypse by way of dressing in togas, and on to the classic hoedown. We are also bringing back the Under 21 dance for the younger crowd so bring your dancing shoes and prepare to shimmy!
The scavenger hunt is going digital this year! Grab your cell phone or digital camera and get ready to comb the convention for items that you think will fit the list. Interpretation is half the fun!
This year we want to acknowledge the groups actually out there trying to save the world and make it a better place for all of us. If you know of any special groups you would like to have at the convention, please drop them a line or contact us at specialevents@norwescon.org. We have some amazing organizations in the area and would love to showcase them!

We're premiering a geekmusic podcast this very month! It's also a sneak preview at what's coming up in nwcMUSIC 2013 at Norwescon 36. We talk a bit about what we've got planned, play some music, and talk with filkers and nerdcore artists about doing music geek-style. More . . .
We have something super-special this year: a multiple-act Friday afternoon showcase of nerdcore, the hip-hop of geeks, called MONSTARRS OF NERDCORE. It starts at 4pm, right after the Catherine Asaro concert, which is also going to be amazing.
And that's not to forget the rest of our concert series this year, which we think is exceptional.
Thursday has Rai Kamishiro doing her J-pop stylings, Jonny Nero Action Hero's first appearance at Norwescon with his chiptunes rock, and nwcMUSIC regular Electric Children's high-energy chiptunes dance music. Friday evening: Hello, the Future! sings about the intersections of fandom and reality, Leannan Sidhe have their long-awaited CD release show, and Starlight returns with a new lineup to bring their filk-rock to the foreground again.
More . . .
There simply isn't enough space in this newsletter to cover the wonders in store for you.

Hi Everyone,
We've heard your questions and comments about the new registration process for Norwescon. In answer, here's how it will work:
If you have preregistered there are two ways of receiving your badge at Registration. If you have already printed off your Acceptable Use Policy form (AUP*) with the pre-printed barcode that identifies you, you can go directly to the registration cashier. Otherwise, your AUP can be printed at the convention. There will be staff on hand that will help you do this. The general registration process is described below. *Note: The AUP form is an agreement between you and the convention that you will abide by the rules. Your signature on the AUP is required, so electronic format of your AUP will not be accepted. Paper copy is required.
Pre-printing your AUP is not required, but it can help speed up the registration process. In case you cannot find your original confirmation email or the original AUP link was broken, you will be able to print your AUP w/barcode from an email that will be sent to you in the next couple of days. If you have paid your membership and do not receive the follow up AUP-email by Wednesday, March 20th, please email registration@norwescon.org .
If you have not preregistered, there will be staff on hand to help direct you to the on-site registration kiosks where you will enter your registration information. Our staff will then direct you on to the next step in the registration process.
The general registration process for pre-paid attendees will be:
Go to the area marked in Green to start the process.
If you do not have a pre-printed AUP w/barcode, one will be printed out for you there. If you do have the AUP you will be directed where to go next.
Sign your AUP.
Present your signed AUP and photo ID to a registration cashier.
The registration cashier will compare your photo id to your real name on the AUP. The barcode will then be scanned to print your badge. The form will be returned to you.
Take your signed AUP to the badge printing station and exchange it for a badge that matches the badge name on your paperwork. There you will also pick up your registration packet.
Come to the Green Room (Cascade 11) when you arrive. The Green Room staff will have your Acceptable Use Policy form (AUP*) with the pre-printed barcode that identifies you with your packet. (For your Guest of Pro, their AUP will be with the associated Pro's packet). The Green Room staff will scan your barcode to print your badge. You'll need to sign the AUP, collect your packet, and you're all signed in.
The Dealers Room Coordinator will, as usual, have your Dealer and assistant badges. You will need to sign your Acceptable Use Policy form (AUP*).
Thank you Everyone!
