Chairman’s Corner

I wanted to let you all know how excited I am to be chairman of Norwescon again. It has been 4 years since I was last chair. Many things have changed since then, but one thing has remained consistent; Norwescon is put on a by a very dedicated group of volunteers who are very passionate about their convention.

Norwescon is always looking for more people to join us on putting on one of the best conventions around. If Norwescon has improved your life in someway, I am asking you to consider volunteering a bit of your time to help keep Norwescon a strong healthy convention. This could be as little as volunteering for a couple of hours at the convention, to joining us on the convention committee to help plan each year’s convention.

One of things we were very excited about last year was the use of Maxi’s Bar at the top of the tower for night time events. We had hoped that we would be able to continue this in future years, but the cost for Norwescon to use this space for the 2 nights turned out to be much higher than anticipated. In today’s tight economy the executive team and myself felt that the cost was too high for an age-restricted venue that only a small portion of the membership used last year.

We will continue to work with the hotel, to see what we can do on improving the relationship between the Maxi’s patrons and our membership, as we know this is a concern for a number of you. I would love to hear back from our membership if they felt we made the right choice regarding the Maxi’s Bar; please send me any comments you might have on this or any other Norwescon issue to chair@norwescon.org

I hope to see you all at the convention this coming April.

Shawn Marier
Norwescon 34 Chairman

Would you like to promote your club?

Then reserve space to run a social in Hospitality. You can have 1 or 2 hours or more. Just contact Personnel@norwescon.org and let us know more about your group and how we can help you.

Norwescon 34 Art Show

We are planning another amazing art show for you again for Norwescon 34. We are once again bringing you great local talent, as well as new artists, which we hope will create an exciting art show for you this year. We are thrilled to feature this year’s Artist Guest of Honor, Kinuko Y. Craft. Ms. Craft has won numerous national awards, including 4 Chesleys, gold and silver medals from the Society of Illustrators, and is a Spectrum Grand Master. She is also the illustrator for many of the books by this year’s writer guest of honor, Patricia A. McKellip. We are excited and honored to have Ms. Craft as our Artist Guest of Honor this year.

Something new and exciting is happening this year at the Norwescon art show: students. Norwescon is sponsoring scholarship programs this year; one for Tyee High School, which is located less than a mile from our location, and another for the Northwest School of Art in Poulsbo. Art will be displayed in our art show and judged at Norwescon for the awarding of the scholarships. We are pleased that we are able to support the up-and- coming science fiction and fantasy artists of the future, and hope we can continue this program for years to come.

News for artists: All of the information that you need to sign up for the art show is on our website at norwescon.org/exhibitors. If you have any questions always feel free to contact us directly. You can reach us at artshow@norwescon.org.

The art show is looking for more great volunteers. Become part of the team who through their hard work make the art show fun and successful. If you are interested in joining us, we would love to hear from you.

Doug and Pat
Booze Art Show Managers

For Artshow sign up information go to: norwescon.org/exhibitors/ or email: artshow@norwescon.org

Fantasy of the Mind

Norwescon 34 invites you to explore Fantasy of the Mind. First, PSIence Guest of Honor Marie D. Jones helps us explore paranormal phenomenon. With her help, we can delve deeper into the Time Prompt Phenomenon, look at various psychic possibilities, find out what might happen in 013, and examine Déjà-vu. Marie’s books explore these ideas, and more, through anecdotes, research, and history. Marie is also co-host on the popular Dreamland radio show interviewing luminaries in the fields of the paranormal, science, unknown anomalies, and alternative history.

Next, Author Guest of Honor Patricia A. McKillip guides us on a fantastical journey to the realms of fairyland. Behind the world we see, there are other worlds, and Patricia McKillip takes us there. Her novels have been winners of the World Fantasy Award, Locus Award, and Mythopoeic Award, and have received numerous nominations for a variety of awards; in 2008, she was a recipient of the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement. In addition to her well-know Riddlemaster trilogy, she has published more than 20 other novels and a number of short stories.

Artist Kinuko Y. Craft will show us those worlds, and more, through her stunning paintings. Her work can be found on book covers, opera posters, fairy tale books, covers for many national magazines such as Time, Newsweek and The National Geographic, and has been added to the collection of the National Portrait Gallery. She is internationally recognized for her work and was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 2008.

Spotlight Publisher PYR books, with just five years under their belts, has a firm handle on Fantasy. The Science Fiction and Fantasy arm of Prometheus Books, PYR encourages you to “ignite your imagination.”

Finally, Special Guests of Honor Jim and Shannon Butcher. Jim Butcher takes you on a walk down the wild and fantastical streets of...Chicago. The Dresden Files, Jim’s gritty Urban Fantasy series, brings the supernatural right into the middle of a major American city. These novels, along with the Codex Alera series and Jim’s other books, take us through a variety of fantasy realms. Perhaps, when we see him in April, we can convince him to tell us about the strange and wondrous land of Missouri, where he lives. Shannon K. Butcher has two series in print the romantic suspense Delta Force Trilogy and an ongoing paranormal romance series “The Sentinel Wars.” Ms. Butcher entered the world of authorship after discovering her love of systems translated well to the writing of plots.

In addition to our wonderful guests, a huge crew of pros and panelists will be serving up a ton of great panel programming. Also this year, Studio Foglio will be presenting a Girl Genius radio play, our popular “Let’s Make A Movie!” work shop is back, and we have some fantastic musical performances lined up. Prepare to be mesmerized, by Fantasy of the Mind.

SunnyJim Morgan
Programming Director

Hotel Corner

Hotel rooms sold out faster than ever for Norwescon 34! Norwescon officially exceeded its contracted room block on October 4, and over 2000 room nights have been booked. We have arranged an alternate room block and special Norwescon rate with the DoubleTree’s sister hotel down the street. Using the code NOR will garner you a $129.00 per night rate at the Hilton. Other area hotels also offer special Norwescon rates, but it is important to book early. Check the website for more information. Also, if you’ve reserved a room that you know you won’t need, consider offering your reservation on the Norwescon Forum so that other members can benefit.

Reservations for suites, party rooms, and family rooms have begun being distributed on a first come first serve basis as of 12:01 AM on November 1, 2010, to members who wrote to hotels@norweson.org. This is also the address you should write to if you encounter any problems whatsoever interacting with the hotel! More information about reserving suites is available on the Hotel page at Norwescon.org. There are still parlor suites and family rooms available at the DoubleTree.

Finally, to pass the time, you can write a limerick about the DoubleTree and send it to hotels@norwescon.org. If it’s funny, we will giggle!

Kevin Black & Scott Surber
Hotel Liaisons

GOH PANEL TEASER

Congratulations, you've made it all the way to the end of this newsletter. As a reward here is a randombly generated glimpse at one panel that will be taking place at Norwescon 34.

Urban Fantasy: "Kickassitude" 2 pm Evergreen 3 & 4
One current definition of "urban fantasy" is "contemporary, urban setting with a female or male protagonist who usually ha a certain amount of 'kickassitude' combined with supernatural powers or connection. The narrative is often structured like a basic detective plot with a romantic relationship subplot. It's action-oriented and often has strong horrific elements balance with humor." How important is this element to a good urban fantasy? Who are the characters who kick ass, and who are the writers creating them?

Kat Richardson, Jack Skillingstead, M.H. (Maggie) Bonham, Jim Butcher

Not that we're saying it's going to change but, please confirm time, location, etc. when you arrive at the con.

Norwescon Charity Art Auction

As many of you are aware Norwescon presents an art auction on Sunday of the convention. It's actually two auctions in one; we not only auction the art that's been bid on during the convention, we also auction donated art, jewelry, and other fan-favorites to benefit our chosen charities. This year we are continuing to support Clarion West Writers Workshop and Northwest Harvest.

Something very special we wanted you to know about our charity auction this year; the family of our good friend and long time volunteer Audrey Penty have donated many of her most cherished pieces of art in her name. Audrey was an avid collector of art and the pieces that have been donated to this year auction are very special, most of which are framed and ready to hang. We have pieces from Michael Whelan, Rob Carlos, Jody Bergsma, John R. Gray III Monique Livingston and more.

The Norwescon Art and Charity Art Auction is a heck of a lot of fun to watch and even more fun to participate in....watch the bids fly and the humor soar, help support young writers become professionals, and help our community in these still-tough times.

VOLUNTEERS

We can't do it without you!

You can help make Norwescon happen, especially when you volunteer time to assist with making sure everything runs smoothly and tasks are completed.
Hugo Nominees Announcement Event

At last year's Eastercon (British National SF Conven2on) an experiment was made with a live announcement of the Hugo nominees by the 2010 Hugo Administrator Vincent Docherty to a packed local audience, combined with live online coverage of the event.

This year, the experiment is been taken one step further, with the Hugo Nominees being co-announced at this year's Eastercon (Illustrious) and at Norwescon 34. The nominees will be announced jointly by the 2011 Hugo Administrator Vincent Docherty at Eastercon and by the chair of the 2011 Worldcon (Renovation) Patty Wells at Norwescon 34, with each taking it their turn to announce the nominees in a category, and with the whole event being covered live online. The event will take place on Sunday 24th April at 10pm UK Time)/2pm (Pacific).

Renovation is very grateful to Norwescon 34 for providing the opportunity to announce the nominees of science fiction's illustrious award in a presentation spanning East and West. Come and see if your favorite work or author will be a nominee, and find out the winners at Renovation in Reno, August 17-21 at the 69th annual Hugo Awards Ceremony.

Bring your song, your dance, your jokes, your magic act, your confusing and disturbing popsicle performance art, or whatever you can show off to our daytime audience and panel of d/r/u/n/k/s/ celebrity guests!
Fandance Film Festival

Forget about the tuxedo, parachute, and collagen injections-this is a film festival you can have fun at!

Welcome to the Twelfth Annual Fandance Film Festival, hosted at Norwescon 34! Twelve years of madness, filmmaking, and of seeing all the latest, greatest, funniest, weirdest, and most bleeding, squealing, giant smashing roboting edge entertainment still available without extensive tipping (mind you, we're not saying no). The festival is a celebration of low- and no-budget cinema, brought to wondrous lurching life by amateur filmmakers from all around the Pacific Northwest.

More than just movies, this 120-minute extravaganza of entertainment will also include the filmmakers, who will regale you with terrifying tales of their productions. Be there, or be a regular right quadrilateral!

The Fandance Film Festival is the final phase of the "Let's Make a Movie!" workshop. The workshop walks participants through every step of making a movie, from conception to the premiere of the finished product. This year at Norwescon also marks the twelve-year anniversary of "Let's Make a Movie!"

For more information please visit http://www.norwescon.org/filmfestival/

This panel is scheduled for 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, April 24, 2001, in Evergreen 3 & 4. A membership is required to attend.

Kinuko Y. Craft Offers an Exclusive Opportunity for Her Fans

The art show staff has been working closely with Kinuko and her husband Mahlon on her attendance as this year's Artist Guest of Honor. Borsini-Burr gallery of Montara, California, who represents Kinuko's art and prints exclusively, graciously gave the Crafts permission to offer prints of her work in the convention Print Shop that the Crafts have specially prepared for Norwescon. A very limited number of these signed archival prints will be available for purchase. They include art that has appeared on the covers of many of Patricia A. McKillip's books and some of Kinuko's personal favorites. In addition to these prints, the Crafts are showing three amazing giclées on canvas. Signed and numbered limited editions of these for purchase will be made available by direct order from her gallery. And of course Kinuko will also be showing some original work as well as working sketches, all of which will also be offered to her fans. This will be an amazing opportunity to see and collect Kinuko Y. Craft's work and your art show team is excited to be able to present this stunning work to you.

Let's Make a Movie!

The "Let's Make a Movie!" workshop's a mile-a-minute combination of workshop, improvisation, and technology, and for the past decade has been regularly producing short films from each and every workshop.

In the "Let's Make a Movie!" workshop, everybody joins in on a round-robin soup-to-nuts moviemaking experience. The workshop exposes the writhing entrails of the filmmaking process, to show -- through a hands-on step-by-step process -- to each and every participant that not only can they make a movie, but that they can make a fairly decent movie with a story and a structure, with practically no lead time or prep time.

If you want to review a few movies that have come about from this workshop, please check out "Con of the Dead," and "Manslugs!: the making of a sci-fi original" at http://www.guerrilla-productions.org/Downloads.html which are more horror/sci-fi in flavor.

The workshop heads include local low-budget filmmakers Edward Martin III ("The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath," "Flesh of my Flesh," etc.), Eric Morgret ("Strange Aeons: The Thing on the Doorstep"), Ryan K. Johnson ("Star Trek: The Pepsi Generation," "Flesh of my Flesh"), and Brian Oberquell (Pyro and effects specialist from Vancouver BC).

CONVENTION T-SHIRTS

The official convention t-shirt is available for sale in the lobby from Offworld Designs. It features artwork by our Artist Guest of Honor, Kinuko Y. Craft.
By volunteering you can earn cool prizes, share in some of the behind the scenes fun, and compete for great rewards! And don't forget that by volunteering your time, you also get some great food and privileges at the convention, and during the summer at the Volunteer Picnic too! Take on a task or two to help make Norwescon 34 that much better than it already is.

After you pick up your membership badge at registration why not stop by the Volunteer Lounge (Olympic 2) and take on a task and become eligible for rewards.
